30 Days Before Tomb Raider

Alone, cold, hungry, and racked with fear, Lara Croft faces a difficult origin story. The upcoming Tomb Raider prequel will dive into the history of the legendary adventurer and how she came to hone her survival skills and taste for the unknown.  Brimming with action, intrigue, and a few notes of the supernatural, Tomb Raider looks to upstage its predecessors as the franchise's finest.

With only a few weeks separating us from the launch of Tomb Raider, we decided to sit down and review some of the essentials and prepare you for Lara's return. If you haven't kept up to date with Tomb Raider over the last couple months, start right here.

And bring your bow and arrows.

The Basics

A young Lara Croft is embarking on one of the first major archaeological expeditions of her life when suddenly the worst Gilligan’s Island episode of all-time happens to her. She’s shipwrecked, separated from her friends, and quite possibly concussed.

So begins the reboot of gaming’s most badass heroine since Samus Aran. The new Tomb Raider is darker, grittier, and downright dirtier than ever, with Lara left to fight for her own survival against cave-ins, burning buildings, plane crashes, and some very crazy people. In actual play, this translates to bows and arrows, torches, physics-based puzzles, platforming, quick-time events, and lots of guns, too. Oh, and some honest-to-goodness tombs to raid, just as the title suggests.

Steady, Lara. Steady.

It promises to be an interesting mix of scripted sequences, stealth combat, blazing action (literally, action that happens in the middle of blazing fires), and character-focused story. It’s an action game, but at the same time it’s not. It’s a puzzle game, but at the same time it’s not. It’s a multiplayer game, but…well, on second thought let’s not talk about that. This isn’t your average third-person shooter.

Who It's For

Do you like action, adventure, and the thrill of survival? Tomb Raider is designed with you in mind.

Furthermore, this prequel is a fantastic starting point for those of you that missed the original run of Tomb Raider games starting in 1996. Because the new Tomb Raider functions as an origin story, no previous experience with Lara is required. You can jump in and enjoy the story with ease.

And of course if you like the Uncharted series by Naughty Dog, Tomb Raider will likely fit your tastes. Just saying.

How It Looks

Lara's younger, realistic design has garnered early praise from the press, but her sharp beauty isn't the only thing worthy of note in Tomb Raider. Expect to see haunting caves, dense forests, and kinetic set pieces that will get the heart pounding. And for a start, you can check out these screens.

Tomb Raider launches on March 5th, 2013.
