Instagram has spent the past two years-plus creating a thriving social network based upon the simple idea of sharing filtered photos from mobile devices. While the service has faced its share of ups and downs in regards to ownership of the photos you upload, moving to the web is an obvious next-step in the evolution of Instagram.
Starting today, you can finally check out your full Instagram feed online. The interface is immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with the service, a near clone of the scrolling feed found in the mobile app.
"Your Instagram feed on the web functions much like it does on your mobile phone," writes co-founder Kevin Systrom. "You can browse through the latest photos of people whom you follow with updates as people post new photos. Like photos by double clicking on them or pressing the like button."
One caveat to the Instagram site: you can't upload photos. If you want your friends to see that tilt-shifted picture of the bologna sandwich you had for lunch, the mobile application is still necessary. According to Systrom, Instagram doesn't offer web uploads because the service is still "about producing photos on the go, in the real world, in realtime."
Well, or maybe they just don't want Instagram to become Imgur. Just a hunch.
